Google Begins Phased Rollout of Gemini Notebook Study Tools

Google has outlined a phased expansion of Gemini Notebook focused on studying. Announced on September 15, the updates include spoken conversations about notebook sources, mobile lecture recording, interactive learning overviews, additional quiz formats and short explanatory videos. Individual features will arrive on different schedules and carry separate language, age and subscription conditions.

The real-time conversation feature will operate through the Android and iOS apps in nearly 100 languages. Users will be able to ask questions aloud, request step-by-step help and interrupt spoken responses. Google says those responses are grounded in the sources stored in the notebook. Access is rolling out during the announcement week to Google AI Ultra subscribers aged 18 and over, with Google AI Pro subscribers and other users expected to follow.

A recorder scheduled for the following week will let users capture lectures or spoken thoughts in the mobile app. The resulting notes will appear alongside existing sources and can be edited, cited or discussed through notebook chat. Google says support for those notes extends across web and mobile, including for users under 18. At launch, however, English must be selected as the output language in settings.

Under Reports, interactive learning overviews will bring together summaries and materials such as infographics, quizzes and flashcards. Google plans to make the format available to all users over the next few weeks. During the same period, quizzes are due to gain short-answer, multiple-select and fill-in-the-blank questions. Users will also be able to add or edit questions manually and ask notebook chat about their performance after completing quizzes or flashcards.

Gemini Notebook will also create Short Video Overviews in more than 80 languages. Google describes these as videos lasting about 60 seconds that combine narrative summaries with educational animation. They are intended to explain material including formulas, diagrams and scientific concepts, and completed videos can be shared with classmates or other people.

Practical context: Taken together, the features extend Gemini Notebook from organizing sources into a study cycle that can capture material, provide explanations, generate practice exercises and review results in the same notebook. The company’s assertion that responses are grounded in sources does not eliminate the need to compare explanations with the originals. Availability will also vary because the main additions have distinct rollout dates, language settings and age requirements.

Google separately announced free 12-month plans for eligible college students. The U.S. offer includes Google AI Pro and four times the Gemini Notebook usage limits available to non-AI subscribers. Eligible students in more than 140 other markets can receive Google AI Plus with twice those limits. Both offers must be redeemed by December 31, 2026, require a valid payment method and convert to paid subscriptions after the free period unless cancelled.
