Barclays Expands Claude Across Software and Bank Operations
Barclays expects Claude Code to reach 50% of its developers by the end of 2026, before expanding to a majority of its software engineers in 2027. Anthropic said the British bank is extending Claude across its global operations to accelerate software development, modernize legacy systems and improve operational efficiency.
The expansion builds on Barclays’ Colleague Knowledge Assistant, which has been live since 2025. The internal service uses Claude through a retrieval-augmented generation architecture to help Barclays UK employees find information when assisting the bank’s more than 20 million UK retail customers.
According to Anthropic, more than 16,000 Barclays employees have adopted the assistant, which has completed over one million searches. The company says this provides faster access to information and quicker customer support, although its announcement does not provide before-and-after measures of response speed or service quality.
Claude is also being used in Barclays’ Global Markets business to classify and enrich incoming emails, select an appropriate processing route, prioritize requests and check whether they contain the information operations staff need. Anthropic says the platform processes approximately 120,000 emails per day and reduces manual handling, but it does not quantify the labor savings.
Barclays also plans to use Claude as an increasingly agentic capability within the way it builds, tests, secures and operates technology. The bank identifies legacy-platform modernization and software-quality improvements as intended applications. The announcement does not specify the Claude model versions involved, employee access conditions, broader rollout dates beyond the Claude Code targets, or results from controlled evaluations.
Practical context: The significance is the move from a single internal assistant to several specialized workflows on a shared model platform: knowledge retrieval, inquiry routing and software development. The evidence remains limited to figures and outcomes reported by the partners, without an independent assessment of accuracy, error rates or financial impact. Barclays says its deployments are subject to governance, security controls and human oversight.
